She’s so beautiful

I remember when I was in grade 5 all I wanted for Christmas was to be beautiful.   I prayed and asked God for it and just to be safe, I mentioned it to Santa as well.   I had such faith that God was going transform me into a beautiful girl.   I woke up Christmas morning, immediately rushed to the mirror only to see my buck teeth still sticking out of my mouth and my chunky-self still standing there.  I was so disappointed.  I sat on the edge of my bed and cried.

What on earth is a 10 year old doing worrying about looks already?!  I knew  at this young age that I was chubbier than all the other kids.  I was already self-conscious.

What I want to know is who dictates what’s beautiful?  Who starts these “trends?”.    Years ago, curves were beautiful!  Ever taken a look at a picture of Marilyn Monroe? She’s got curves AND her tummy isn’t completely flat!  When did having a completely flat tummy become sexy?  Who started that?  (when I get my hands on them….)

Big is in, then thin.   Big poofy dresses (like the awful one I wore for grade 12 grad…), then long elegant silk.   Big hair then flat, strait as a board hair.   Bell bottoms, skinny jeans…  acid wash, leather….. ahhh!   Seriously, is there a committee somewhere that says “Ok THIS is what’s hot now….”

But did you know God tells us what HE finds beautiful? Is anyone listening to His opinion?  Will anyone stop the madness and pause to hear what He has to say?

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.  The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the fear of the Lord. (Proverbs 31:30 The Message)

Sound sexy? Most may shake their heads wondering what the heck that means.  We all know that beauty doesn’t last.   Botox, tummy tucks, boob jobs, anti-aging products all show our fascination with staying young.   But one day, it will catch up…

I mentioned in a past blog that we, as women, have a inner desire to be admired and even praised.  It’s not a prideful thing, gals.  It’s femininity that God delicately placed in our bosom to be womanly and for men to admire.  We really are to be praised!  (He may have placed a little too much in my bosom, but that’s another story….)

What’s wrong with the picture is when we try to gain that admiration through means that we were never meant to.   Things that feed pride in our hearts; things like what WE define as “beautiful”.   And there’s no defining it because it always changes.   What DOESN’T change, however, is what God has stated as the standard of what He says deserves that admiration: to fear Him

That’s odd…. does God want us to be afraid of Him?  He thinks that makes us admirable?  No, let’s find out what He’s talking about.

To fear in the Hebrew (the language it was written in) means to revere.  To stand in awe.    Reverence.  So to fear God really just means to revere and stand in awe of Him.  Easy?  Not all the time because that means to hate what God hates, love what He loves, being willing to obey God even when it hurts – when no one’s watching…. even if it benefits you nothing. It literally means surrendering every ounce of your SELF to Him: your opinions, plans, thoughts, actions to Him.  THAT to Him is absolutely breathtaking.

There you have it.  That’s what God finds sexy.  That’s what God says deserves admiration.  That IS beauty in its purity.   It sure goes against the flow doesn’t it?  Now here’s the tough questions:

  • Can you focus on THIS standard of beauty?   For example, just as you’d spend time on your hair, makeup, working out etc, can you spend time building your relationship with Him in your life?  Living in the fear of the Lord, as it says.  Spending time with Him and allowing Him to mold your heart?
  • Can you believe, truly believe that as you allow Him to mold your heart, as you pour out your life in sweet surrender that it makes you truly worthy of admiration?  That it makes you…. beautiful?
  • Can you judge beauty differently?   Can you see people differently now?  Can you see past the outer exterior of what the world claims as beautiful and see a woman walking down the hall who beams with the fear of the Lord?  Can you spot her?  Or are your eyes still blinded by trends and outward appearance?

Now’s the time ladies.   Its time to become…. beautiful.

I was just talking to this guy I work with regarding fashion trends. He had taken note that the 80’s are back and not too long ago it was kinda this mixture between the 70’s and the 80’s. But what he had also taken note of is the fact that a lot of the people that seem to be visiting the 80’s fashion … make note that they’re not re-visiting the 80’s. Those of us who lived through the 80’s have learned from our fashion mistakes 😉 But anyhoo, the point is, none of these kids who are saying 80’s fashion is so cool really have an understanding of where the fashion came from and who in the 80’s popularized “the look” like the glasses without the prescription lenses, the flat shoes with the skinny tight jeans, and I really hope that the big poofy hair and the loud makeup for women remains a thing of the past because I’d hate for women to dress up like a clown and think they’re hot! lol OK, so maybe calling 80’s makeup more like clown makeup is going a bit extreme 😉 but you get the point.

Btw… there is this so called “committee” that tends to say what’s in and what’s not in. They’re the fashion designers that people tend to follow just because they say this is in and this is not in. When fashion designers bring in modals with curves and who have a few extra pounds and are not forced to live with less than 10% body fat, when producers and talent agencies are not forcing people to lose that extra 10 pounds, die their hair, and magically change a persons looks digitally then maybe we’ll start to see a healthier trend in the industry. And then, if people, especially women become secure in who they are as women even with the extra 10 pounds they think they need to lose then that may force the industry to make some changes. And besides that, most women by into the lie that most men want women with the extremely fat belly and who are really super skinny. When most men I’ve talked to will say quite the opposite. A woman with all the looks but no intelligence and really insecure will make her outer appearance less attractive.

There is a byproduct of spending time in the scriptures and in prayer and devoting her life to the Lord. It is the fact that she will become secure with who God created her to be and that will bring out her natural beauty.
